However, we still need to do more to achieve gender equity in the digital industry.
Research by the World Economic Forum has shown that empowering women with digital skills can greatly enhance their employability and earning potential while closing the gender gap in the tech industry (source: The Future of Jobs Report 2020). So, on this International Women’s Day, let’s embrace equity and commit to providing women with the skills they need to succeed.
However, upskilling alone isn’t enough. We also need to prioritize online safety, especially for women who are often the targets of malicious predators and scammers. Fortunately, there are powerful tools and services available to help keep our data safe, such as password managers, two-factor authentication, VPNs, and services like “Take-it-down” and “Stopncii.”
Empowering women and girls with knowledge and digital tools is crucial for them to participate and thrive in digital spaces. Every woman has the right to freedom of expression, even in the digital world. That’s why we must advocate for a responsive approach to innovation, technology, and digital education that empowers women with the information and know-how they need to succeed.
As the inspiring Malala Yousafzai once said, “When women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them – their families, their communities, and their countries”.
